Natural Tick Prevention for Dogs

Two years ago my dog  Thor came down with Lyme Disease. The symptoms came on fast and it was very scary to see him become lame and unable to eat.  The vet helped but it took two rounds of antibiotics over many weeks.  I have learned to be more diligent with him, our home and being on the defense every day. That includes monthly topical, natural preventatives, visual inspections and stepped up grooming for the spring-fall months.

WHAT IS LYME DISEASE IN DOGS?

Lyme disease is an infectious tick-borne disease. It is caused by a type of bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi. The most common initial symptoms of Lyme disease in dogs include fever, joint swelling, limping, lameness and lethargy. Infection typically occurs after the Borrelia-carrying tick has been attached to the dog for at least 18 hours.

WHAT TO DO TO TREAT YOUR DOG TO PREVENT FLEA & TICKS

Have a discussion with your vet – especially if you live in a high prone state.

TREAT Monthly topical tick treatments such as K9Advantix, Sentry, and others. Very effective but some owners worry about harsh side effects. There are natural treatments  you can do alone or ideally in conjunction with vet approved preventative measurements

GROOMING:  Spring is a good time to revaluate grooming. Just as humans switch over regimes for winter and summer you should treat your dogs coat as it relates to the season.  NATURAL FLEA AND TICK SHAMPOOS there are many all natural, gentle formulations on the market to choose from. UP THE BRUSHING- you may need to switch to daily brushing if your dog is very active outdoors. GET A FLEA COMB. Use this comb only after you have thoroughly combed your pet’s coat with a regular grooming comb.

INSPECT  Pets should also be inspected for ticks after walks, especially this time of year, if you live in a densely brush area or lyme disease zone such as NY/CT. ALERT: Learn how to properly remove a tick from the skin to avoid infection
